Jean III de Grailly (c. 1343 - 1377), Captal de Buch, son of Jean II de Grailly and Blanche de Foix. Jean held the important lordship of Buch as well as those of Castillon, Bénauges and other English strongholds in the duchy of Aquitaine. He was a founder member of the Order of the Garter and a famous military leader of the Hundred Years’ War whom Froissart held in great esteem, and often described as the ideal chivalric knight. He had married Rose d’Albret, and had a son and heir, Archambaud de Grailly, by her. There is no mention of a brother in any of the sources consulted by the project.

Ces nouvelles oyes par le prince de Galles, il se hasta de
chevauçan celle part. Si vint tout l’ost en la ville de Roumorentin qui ja estoit
toute plaine de leurs gens et s’estudioient comment a leur avantaige ilz pourroient assaillir le chastel. La vint le prince armé de toutes pieces, monté sur un
coursier noir et congneurent asséz que la forteresce estoit prenable. Lors dist le prince a monseigneur Jehan Chandos : "Jehan, Jehan, aléz jusques aux barrieres et parléz aux chevaliers qui sont
leans assavoir s’ilz se voudroient rendre bel lement sans eulx faire assaillir." Lors
se parti messire Jehan Chandos du prince si vint devant les barrieres
et fist signe qu’il vouloit parlementer d’aucune chose. Ceulx qui estoient a la garde
demanderent son nom et depar qui il estoit la envoié. Il se nomma et dist qu’il estoit la
envoié depar son seigneur le prince de Galles. Quant ce sceurent messire
Bouciquaut et l’Ermite, ilz s’avalerent et vindrent aux barrieres. Quant messire Jehan les vit, il les salua et dist : "Seigneurs, je sui
cy envoié a vous par monseigneur le prince qui veult estre moult courtois a
ses ennemiz, si comme il me semble. Il dist ainsi que se vous vous vouléz rendre en sa
prison et rendre ceste forteresce cy qui n’est pas tenable, il vous prendra a
mercy et vous fera tres bonne compaignie." "Messire
Jehan," respondy messire Bouciquaut, "Grant merciz a monseigneur le
prince qui nous veult estre si courtois mais ja ne plaise a Dieu qu’il nous ait si
legierement." "Comment," dist messire Jehan Chandos, "Bouciquaut vous sentéz vous si bon chevalier que pour tenir ceste forteresse contre le prince et son effort? Et si ne vous est apparant con fort de nul costé?" "Chandos, Chandos,"
respondy Bouciquaut, "je ne me tieng pas pour bon chevalier mais
folie nous feroit mettre en tel parti d’armes comme vous nous offréz quant il n’est encore
nul besoing. Face le prince ce que bon lui semblera nous sommes tous

de messire Bouciquaut si ne l’en prisa mie moins. Si commanda toutes
manieres de gens a eulx logier pour le jour car l’en demain il vouldroit essaier se par
assaut il pourroit avoir la dicte forteresce.

de gens d’armes s’armerent et archiers aussi et se trait chascun a sa baniere si
commencierent a assaillir du rement le chastel de Roumorentin. Les archiers
se tenoit sur les fosséz et traioient si dru que a paines osoit nul apparoir aux defences.
Et les autres nagoient sur huis et sur cloies, pieux et hoyaux, ars et saiettes en leurs
mains, si vindrent au fons du mur houer et piqueter. La estoient les chevaliers
amont le sire de Craon, messire Bouciquaut et l’Ermite de
Chaumont qui trop bien s’aquittoient d’eulx defendre. Et gettoient et faisoient
getter aval pierres et cailloux et pos plains de chaux dont ilz mehaingnoient durement
ceulx qui aconsuiviz en estoient. Et la fu occiz du léz des Englois un bon escuier et moult gentil et qui eut grant plainte lequel s’appelloit Raimon de
Zedulach, si estoit de la route du Captal de Beus. Cel assaut dura toute
jour en journee a petit de repos et se trairent toutes manieres de gens en leurs logeis en la ville de Roumorentin et dehors aussi. Et entendirent les haities a mettre a
