from thence through the Streets, were soon empty.

Lastly, An unusual Negligence at first, and a confidence of easily quenching it, and of its stopping at several probable places afterwards; turned at length into a Confusion, Consternation and Despair; People chusing, rather by flight to save their Goods, than by a vigorous opposition to save their own Houses and the whole City.

To all which Reasons must not be past over the general Suspicion, that most then had of Incendiaries, laying combustible Stuff in many Places, having observed divers distant Houses to be on Fire together. And many were then taken up upon Suspicion.

Having now given the Reader this brief View and Account of the Condition the City of London was in, until Anno 1666. And how in that Year, by a dreadful Conflagration, the greatest Part of it was Buried in its own Ashes: and illustrated the same in a small Map thereof made, and here inserted: let it rest in this ruinous Condition; till I acquaint you how, and by what Means it came to be Re-builded, in that Magnificent, Substantial and Beautiful Manner, as now it is: With its Cathedral and Parochial Churches, Gates, Halls, Publick Edifices, &c. And of all such Aditional Buildings, New Streets, Markets, Courts, and other Ornaments enjoyned, such as the like before were never erected: And this shall be our next Work.

FOR the preventing Inundations, and for easiness of Ascent, be it enacted, that the Street called Thames-Street; and all the Ground between the same Street and the River of Thames, shall be raised and made higher by Three Foot at the least, above the Surface of the Ground as now it lieth.

Now therefore, for the bringing of the Ground unto a nearer Level then formerly it was, At a Meeting of the Commissioners and Surveyors Anno 1667. appointed by Act of Parliament, there were by them made and issued out, These following,

1. TOWER-DOCK in Thames-street is to be raised 3 foot. At 147 foot upwards from Thames-street to be raised 2f. 10 inches: at the highest Part in Tower-street against the middle of St. Alhollows Barking Churh-yard, to be sunk 6 inches.

2. Beer-Lane is to be raised at Thames-street 8f. at 90f. upwards 4f. And to be abated at 192f. upwards, 3 inches. and at Tower-street 6 inches.

3. Water-Lane is to be raised at Thames-street 6f. at 83f. upwards nothing: and to be abated at 128f. upwards, 1f. 11 inches: at Tower-street abate 2f.

4. Harp-Lane is to be raised in Thames-street 7f. at 100f. upwards, 4f. 7 inches: and to be abated at 180f. 1f. 6 inches: at 270f. 3f. 4 inches: at Tower-street 2f. 6 inches.

5. Idle-Lane is to be raised in Thames-street 7f. at 90f. upwards, 4f. 2 inches: and to be abated at 165f. upwards 2f. 3 inches: at 262f. 3f. 10 inches in Tower-street 2f. 6 inches.

6. St. Dunstans-Hill, beginning at Idle-Lane, is to be raised 4f. 2 inches: at 76f. upwards, 3f. 3 inches, at 126f. 1f. and to be abated at 226f. 2f. 1 inch. at Tower-street 1f. 10 inches.

7. St Mary-Hill is to be raised in Thamesstreet 5f. at 87f. upwards, 2f. 6 inches: and to be abated at 187f. 1f. 8 inches, at 287. 5f. 8 inch. at 387. 5f. at little East Cheap 1f. 6 inches.

8. Love-Lane is to be raised in Thamesstreet 4f. at 100f. upwards, 2f. 6 inches, at 200 two f. 3 inches: and to be abated at 270f. 3f. 10 inches; at 370f. 3f. at 470f. 2f. at East Cheap 3f. 10 inches.

9. Buttolphs-Lane is to be raised at Thamesstreet 4f. at 133f. upwards 4f. 5 inches, at 233f. 10 inches, and to be abated at 333f. 2f. at 433f. 2f. at East Cheap 3 inches.

10 Pudding-Lane is to be raised in Thames-street 6f. at 115f. 4f. 5 inches, at 212f. 1f. 8 inches, and to be abated at 300f. 1f. at 400f. 2f. at East Cheap 5f. 9 inches.

11. New-Fish-street-Hill is to be raised at Thames-street 2f. at 80f. upwards, 2f. and to be abated at 280f. nothing, at 380f. 1f. 9 inches at East Cheap, 3f.

12 St. Michaels-Lane is to be raised in Thames-street 7f. at 80f. upwards, 6f. 9 inches at 280f. 6f. 6 inches, at 380f. 2f. 10 inches, and to be abated at 480f. 8 inches at East Cheap, 5 inches the Current of it is 13 inches upon 20f.

13. St. Martins-Lane is to be raised in Thames-street 6f. at 103f. 6f. at 203f. 4f. 3 inches at 303f. 2 inches, and to be abated at 403 f. 2f. 1 inch, at Cannon-street, 1f.

14. St. Laurence-Pountney-Lane is to be raised in Thames-street, 4f. at 157f. 3f. 7 inches, and abated at 261f. 11 inches at 361f. 4f. at Cannon-street, 1f.

16. Suffolk-Lane is to be raised in Thames-street 3f. at 110f. upwards, 2 inches, and to be abated at 190f. 3f. 6 inches at 290f. 7f. 9 inches at the entrance into Ducks-field- Lane, 4f. and 4 inches.

17. Bush-Lane is to be raised in Thames-street, 3f. at 103f. 2f. and to be abated at 203f. 8 inches, at 303f. 4f. 4 inches, in Cannon-street, nothing.

18. Dowgate is to be raised in Thames-street, 3f. at 134f. 1f. 4 inches, raised at Budg- row, 1f.
