Benefice of PRECENTORSHIP OF LINCOLN CATHEDRAL

(LI.LK.DI.01)

This figure is the total assessed value of the benefice. Note that for a cathedral church a zero figure is given because its assessed value is derived from a number of holdings which are listed elsewhere in the taxatio text.

     Assessment for tax:
£ 13. 6s. 8d.

This section gives the modern name of the benefice together with the church dedication and the Ordnance Survey grid reference of the church (click the grid reference to locate the church building on Google Maps). Constituent parts of the benefice, such as vicarage, or any dependent chapels, pensions, portions and prebends, with their values, are also listed here.

This section shows the patronage status of the benefice in 1291-2, the date of the taxatio, as much as can be found in contemporary or near-contemporary sources. The line includes the type of patronage: ecclesiastical, monastic or secular; the name of the patron; and for monastic patrons, the order of their religious house. If the patronage is ecclesiastical or monastic, then it may be an appropriated church. This is shown by the "If Appropriated" line below.

     Patronage:
ecclesiastical, Lincoln, bishop,

This section states whether or not the benefice was appropriated at or near 1291-2, the date of the taxatio. The line may include the type of position instituted, collated or presented and the date, but this information is shown only if available from contemporary or near-contemporary sources.

     If appropriated:
No (inst.) dignity 1299

     Notes:
1 St Michael's church (on the Mount, near the gate) remained at the union of parishes in 1533, and was rebuilt in the nineteenth century.
2 St Peter's (in Parchemingate, within the walls) stood at the angle formed by the junction of Michaelgate and Spring Hill, until its parish was united with St Michael's, some time before 1461.
3 St George (within the walls) has not survived. In 1428 its parish had less than 10 inhabitants.
4 The parish of Holy Trinity (within the walls, at Greyfriars, or under the Hill) was recorded as having less than 10 inhabitants in 1428 and its church was taken down by order of the common council about 1533.
5 St Edmund's church (within the walls) has not survived. Its parish was recorded as having less than 10 inhabitants in 1428.
6 St Swithin's (within the walls) was one of nine remaining churches after the union of parishes in 1549.
7 The parish of Holy Trinity (outside the walls, near the stairs, or in Butwerk) had less than 10 inhabitants in 1428 and was taken down by order of the common council about 1533.
8 St Rumbold's (outside the walls) has not survived. Its parish was returned as having less than 10 inhabitants in 1428.

11 St Peter's (outside the walls, at Eastgate) was rebuilt in 1778-81 and again in 1869-70.
12 St John's (in Wigford) disappeared at the union of parishes in 1549.
13 Holy Trinity (in Wigford) disappeared at the union of parishes in 1549.
14 The church of St Michael (in Wigford, at Gowts) was taken down in 1533 by order of the common council.
15 The church of St Margaret's (in Wigford) was taken down in 1533 by order of the common council.

17 For the Lincoln churches apparently attached to the precentorship see LeNeveRev1Linc 12. One of these churches, Lincoln, St Peter at Gowts (St Peter's in Wigford), is valued separately, as a minute benefice, at Lsd2.6.8. in PLIA5 1 (see LI.LK.DC.X07), which suggests that at the time of the taxatio it was served by a rector and, thus, not annexed to the precentorship. This church, therefore, alone among those listed in LeNeveRev1Linc 12, is excluded here from the proposed listing of annexed Lincoln churches.
