IN the old Law there were Cities of Refuge for men to fly unto
which had accidentally killed a man, but if any one after
he had wilfelly (or accidentally) if it were done when he
was out of his calling or at an unlawfull exercise should kill
2 man or woman and did fly to one of those Cities for Sanctuary
he was so sarre from finding refuge there that the Governour of
the City understanding the matter caused him to be delivered up
to the avenger of blood (which by Moses Law was the next kinsman)
The Lawes of England make provision to save such which
accidentally kill a man (which is called chance medlie) but in other
capitall cases Justice the avenger of blood persues the offendor to
the very gates of their strong holds wherein they think to finde refuge.
The high Court of Justice sate this day in Westminster Hall and
the Earl of Cambridge was brought to the Barr, who pleaded hard
that he was capable of being received into protection for life, humbly
praying the mercy of the Court, promising to spend the best
blood in his veignes for them &c. and being urged by the Councell
for the common wealth to give in his answer, he pleaded that
