Mercurius pragmaticus for King, Number 31, 27th November-4th December 1649 E.584[10]

left it, and will not stay any longer to make sale, being driven away by
Spirits, as a Judgement for their Ablomirable, Wicked, Usurped and
Treacherous selling, and dividing the Portion of God's-Annointed;
mon over there is observable, that having felled a great Tree, called the
King's Oake, and bringing part of it to burne, it would not take Fire,
but leaped out into the Roome, a good way from the Chimney; He assure
you these and many more passages were Related to me, by a Person of
Honor, who dwelt not far there hence.
Yet this doth nothing terrifie our Taskmasters if they can get money
and save what they have got, they care not; their Covetousnesse is insatiable,
for they will not pay Arreares, nor divide their Inheritance
with their fellow Traytors (I meane the Reduced Officers) who have
set the White-hall Cutthroates upon the Pinacle of Usurpation, where
they can have all at Commands whilest these poore Starvelings, who
brought them to it, must (like their Doggs) creepe under the Table, to
lick the Crummes of State, or at best bee made Gleaners of the Rebells-Harvest;
as may appeare by the Crack, now a hammering, which will
enable them to make new Discoveries of Delinquents, which must bee
for the Publque use too, I will promise you; save such a small pittance
as their Masters will allow them in Reward for that Treason, by which
meanes these Blood-Hounds shall have power to prie into all mens
Estates who have already Compounded, and if they will but testifie
that such Compounders have Concealed any part of their-Estates, and
not agreed to the full Value, it will bee sufficient to re-Sequester
them.
Thus these State Miscreants doe still endeavour to spin out the very
Bowels of Loyalty, attempting to make discoveries by all meanes, and
therefore the Knack for a generall Subscription to their Treasonous Ingagement
is assented unto, Pass'd, and Ordered to bee Printed. Is this
the Respect had to tender Consciences? ------ He warrant you the Rebells
will say yes! for they account none tender but those who wil drinke
drunke with Blood.
But I wonder wherefore our Pockie-Saints should make such Ingagements,
and force them to bee taken? since every weeke begets new Petitions
(to their supreme Treachery) from whole Townes, assuring
them that they are their Creatures, and to shew their willingnesse so to
continue, they earnestly desire that their Charters may bee altered, the
better to enable them for the Rebells service; the Petitions of this weeke,
from Bedford, &c. are Referred to a Committee of Traytors, who are
to Confer about it, and doe what shall be thought fit, for the advantage
of the State Anarchy.
