The moderate intelligencer, Number 229, 2nd-9th August 1649 E.568[17]

Authority was in consideration, as to dis-affected Justices, an Act was brought in to
enable the Committee of Indempnity, to receive information against any that do amiss,
which was affonted unto, and ordered to be printed: the Prisoners in many prisons
having been shot at, occasioned the ordering the Act for reliefe of Prisoners to be
again call'd on: They order that a Committee draw up an Act to pull down the Kings
Arms in all Churches, Chappels, Town-halls, and other publike placés, a Committee
was presently named for that work, who are presently to bring in an Act, the Act for
taking accompts of the Commissioners of the Navie, &c. was re-committed, the Accompts
of the Kingdom were also to be considered by the same Committee. The goods
of the late King and Queen not selling so fast as expected, the obstructions were to
be stated and reported: there was a Member re-admitted this day: A Letter from
Hamburg complaining about shipping it was referred to the Committee of the Navie
to consider and report; as to the prejudice that some English Merchants had received
by stop of their ships, which stop was owned by that City: it was referred to
the Councel l of State to write an answer and insert the wrongs.

The house had in consideration the Act wherein North wales is to compound, as
did South wales, for a certain Summe, and so many years value, it was re-committed,
that the names of Commissioners be put in, those in South wales could have wished
that it had been inserted, that none of the friends and great sufferers for Parliament
should have in theirs been taxed or charged. The Act for probate of Wils, &c. was
also proceeded far in, at last recommitted: the Act for Tythes to those that acknowledge
the Government proceeded in.
The Astrologicall pamphlet published in the name of John Booker, on Munday Aug.6.
is by him disowned as a false scandalous and libellous pamphlet.
The Act for continuance of the three moneths Taxe.
WHereas by Act of Parliament of the 7 of April last, the sum of 90000 li. per
mensem, was appointed for the maintenance of the Forces raised by authority
of Parl. for the service of England and Ireland for 6 moneths, from the 25 of
March last 1649, to the 29 of Septem. next ensuing which said sum (to the end the present
service might not be retarded, nor the Cou[unr]es oppressed by Free-quarter) the
Parl. did enact and ordain should be assessed and leavied in manner hereafter mentioned;
viz. The first 3 moneths thereof, from the 25 of March to the 24 of June then following,
according to the ancient and usuall way held in Rates upon the respective Counties
and places mentioned in the said Act: But finding much inequality in that way of
proportioning the former assesments of the Army upon severall Divisions, Towns and
places, to the obstructing and retarding the getting in thereof, did thereupon Enact,
that the latter three moneths of the said six moneths assesment, viz. from the 24 of June,
to the 29 of Septem. ensuing, should be assessed and collected after the way of a pound rate,
being the most equall way of assessing: Now to the end that provision may be timely
made for the said Forces, and that thereby Free-quarter may be effectually prevented,
be it Enacted by this present Parl. and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same,
that the said assesment of 90000 li. shall endure and be continued for 3 moneths, longer,
viz. from, the 29 of Sept. 1649, to the 26 of Decemb. next ensuing, and that the same be
at once levied, assessed and paid, according to the proportions in the latter 3 moneths,
laid upon the severall Counties, Cities and places mentioned in the said Act of the 7 of
Aprill last. And be it farther enacted by the authority aforesaid, that the persons in
the said Act named, and all other persons since nominated Commissioners by any additionall
Act or Order of Parliament, shall be Commissioners for the severall and
