The moderate, Number 44, 8th-15th May 1649 E.555[16]

Numb.44
The Moderate:
Impartially communicating Martial
Affaires to the KINGDOM of
ENGLAND.
From Tuesday May 8. to Tuesday May 15. 1649.
THe overthrow of a Common-wealth is occasioned by its
selt-ish Riders; and Infamy is dy'd of so deep a colour,
that it will never be washed out with oblivion Solon
says, those men are most unhappy of all others, whose
rise all the people so much lament, and at whose fall
much more rejoyce; for good men will not beleeve
them, bad will not obey them, none accompany them,
and few be friend them. Is it no more profit for a
Prince (who is a Tyrant) to have his Common-wealth
rich, and his pallace poor, then his pallace adorned with
glory, and his Nation in adversity? Cruelty hath his curses from Heaven; and
Oppression wants not any upon Earth. If the heavy hands of Tyrants did formerly
oppress us let not the little fingers of pretended Friends utterly destroy us. The eyes
of the no longer fearful, or stand more [unr] of Bugbear persons, or notional Authorities,
then both act for a general good to the Nation, which is indeed the onely
end of their Institutions; and when they fail herein, none will blame them, if
they seek all ways and means possibly, for their own deliverance, and restoring
themselves to their first happeness.
