A modest narrative of intelligence, Number 23, 1st-8th September 1649 E.572[28]

Numb. 23
A Modest Narrative
OF
INTELLIGENCE:
For the Republique of
ENGLAND & IRELAND.
From Saturday, Septemb. 1. to Saturday, Septemb. 8. 1649.
AS Statists observe, They must not be alway fixed in one
Centre of Resolution, but be moved as the sphere of
their turning in the Commonwealth calls for; foundationing
all upon this, The Safety and Profit of the
People; Hence it comes to pass that such mutations
are in States; and there is hereupon a necessity of
Leagues for mutual supplement and support each of other;
And its better keeping fair with a Colleague that
is bordering and poor, though to disadvantage, then with hazard or expence
to make a Conquest that neither in name or value will purchase to the Conqueror
fame or wealth, and the miscarriage may beget dangerous effects.
But a War carryed on, where the place once conquered will prove a rich Reward
to such as fight, and good booty to such as are undertakers for the setting
it on foot and carrying of. it on, will not want Arguments to plead for
it, or Souldiers to fight in it.
