Mercurius politicus, Number 440, 28th October-4th November 1658 E.195[25]

Edward Lord Montague, their General, and the rest of the
Officers belonging to the Sea, and have sent hither their
subscriptions thereunto, which were in like manner preseated
by their said General to his Highness; the Common Seamen
likewise testified their consent thereunto by their hearty
Acclamations, and their Prayers for his Highness long life
and prosperity. His Highness received the same with expressions
of his high esteem and affection towards them all,
for so cordial and ready a demonstration of their Fidelity to
him. By a ship which arrived this week at New-castle, it is certified,
that she met the Dutch fleet a little on this side of the
Zound. And by another ship arrived at Yarmouth which
came thence the 15 instant, it is signified, that as she passed
through the Zound, she was assured, that the King of Sweden
carried on the siege still very vigorously against Coppenhaguen;
that he had newly taken the Island of Amack from whence the
besieged had many supplies of Provision; but of any thing
done as yet by the Dutch fleet, there is no account, and the
most they are like to do is but to put relief into the Town,
and then freezing weather coming on, they cannot stay much
longer there.
From Plymouth, Oct. 26.
These are to acquaint you of our arrival at Plymouth, and
that we came off the coast of Portugal the fourteenth of
this instand: the Colchester Frigat in company with us, and
the ship Giles of London, William Green Master, who came
out of Lisbon, having about five hundred [unr]hests of Sugar
and some mony, to the value of six thousand pounds, and
it being foul weather, the ship proved so leaky, that they
could not keep her free. We did assist him what we could,
with men and such things as they wanted, they stopt some
leakes, and kept her twenty four hours after, but the weather
proved very bad, and more leakes sprang, that she sank
into the Sea; we saved all their men, and the mony, but not
any things else; their ships company and passengers were about
sixtie men. By reason of those men, our provisions being
expended, it caused us to come in four or five days sooner
then we expected.
