TReason never walks so secure as under the
cloak of Religion. Hence it is, that in many
forein States, the Pope makes use of those reverend
Foxes, the Jesuits, to disguise and agitate
his affairs; who having an influence upon
the noblest part of man, the Soul and the
Conscience, can easily fasten what Impressions they please;
and actuate the Zeal of mankinde to carry on any designe, to
the miserable imbroyling of States and Kingdoms; so that
whilst these men are admitted any where to tamper with the
People, no Commonweal can be secure from the reach of
their malice, or the Poyson of their sanctimonious pretences
and enchantments. For this cause it is that at several times,
and upon divers occasions, they have been often banished
out of most Countries, as the common enemies of all order,
peace, and good Government; and I have it by tradition, that
in Poland, notwithstanding many good Laws inhibiting
