The moderate, Number 56, 31st July-7th August 1649 E.568[9]

Numb.56.
The Moderate:
Impartially communicating Martial
Affaires to the KINGDOM of
ENGLAND.
From Tuesday July 31. to Tuesday August 7.1649.
To do evill that good may ensue, is neither allowable by
God, nor instisiable by Man; But for those called good
men, to make league with the worst of evill (naturall Irish,
Romane Catholiques, reputed Rebels, and indeed
the reall authors and actors of the sad Tragedle of massacring
100000. English) and yet impute it the highest
crime in others, that (for a general good, and in case of
as great necessity) shall joyn with another party, that was
ever known reall, faithfull, and indeed the Nations true
friends, is not only weak, and fallatious, but very unjust, and most ridiculous.
But was neither william the Conquerour, nor any other King a Tyrant, because they
pretended Liberty, Ease, and Religion to the People, though they found afterwards
the effects contrary? Is the Pope and Priesthood Fure Druino, because so pretended?
Or the Lawyers equall dispencers of Justice, because so reputed? No surely. Latet
anguis in herba. And though successe may for a time rice upon the wing of Fortune,
yet God at last shall break out in Righteousnesse, and destroy the wicked.
July 31.
