IN the variation of the Roman State,
after that Brutus and Collatinus had
once expelled the Tarquins, and setled
it in the form of a Free Commonweal,
it was set down for a Rule, that
a Zealous Severity was the onely
means to secure their Liberty. And
they were so strict in the practise of it
against Treachery and Treason, that no Relations, nor considerations
whatsoever of former merits, could avail with
them, to spare any that attempted ought against it: For,
when the sons of Brutus were found guilty of a conspiracy,
to bring back the Tarquinian Family, they immediately condemned
them to death, and their own Father was as forward
as any to bring them to execution. So the famous Manlins
likewise, to whom Rome owed both her self and Liberty
(being by him preserved against the Galls in the greatest
extremity) was notwithstanding upon a discovery of his after-intent
